There are several things that you need to consider before you buy a DVD recorder. If you are going to purchase one, make sure to keep the following things in mind.

Antenna Connections

These recorders have different antenna connections. Some have coax cables, letting you plug the antenna into the unit. Others come with pass-through connectors. This signifies the recorder will not tune the channels.

The task will be left to your satellite box. However, there are recorders that can conduct the tuning. Look for recorders with coax connectors, as they make configuration easier.

The TV Connections

If your TV has the coax, there should be no problems. An S-video connector provides good video quality as well. But not all recorders have them, so make sure the unit you buy has it.

Built-in Tuners

Before you buy a DVD recorder, remember that some units have TV tuners included. These are used to record channels and scan various stations. You will need this feature if you want to record one channel while watching another one.

Note: this feature can bump the cost of the recorder, but usually not by much. Tuners come in two types: digital and analog. The biggest difference is that a digital converter does not require a converter to receive analog and digital signals.

Progressive Scan

Sometimes abbreviated as pscan or p-scan, this feature will eliminate the flicker on the screen. This feature is pretty much standard in all the major brands.

Recording Disc Options

Your choices include DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R and DVD-R. The discs with R means you can only record to them once. Those with RW can be recorded on several times. Some DVD recorders can read all four, but others cannot. Make sure the unit can read the discs you intend to use.

Other Information

Some recorders have hard disks built in. The major advantage is that there is more storage room. However, some of the disks may fail over time. Make sure to get a quality drive so problems can be avoided.

If the hard disk should crash, you can buy replacements. The storage capacity of the discs ranges from six to eight hours. Some discs may have more storage.

These are the pertinent points to consider if you are gong to buy a DVD recorder. Always remember that the technological features of DVD recorders are changing all the time. By being updated, you will know what elements to look for.
