DVD Shrink
DVD Shrink is a freeware program that lets you compress original DVDs so you can create backups and copies. The nice thing about the app is that it can get around the encryption that keeps you from burning the DVD disc.
How to Use DVD Shrink
Step 1
Install a DVD burning software first. Many are available for free on the Web.
Step 2
Download and install DVD Shrink. Launch the program. Choose the drive from which the application will be reading. The program will assess the compression rate and the size.
Step 3
Check the size bar (the green one). This will inform you how much of the disc can be put in the DVD-R. A red bar indicates the disc has to be shrunk.
Step 4
After you decide whether to back up the whole disc or only parts of it, click the”backup” button.
Step 5
The program will now copy and if needed, compress the movie. When it is finished, you can remove the disc from the drive.
How to Use DVD Shrink to Make iPod Movies
Step 1
Open DVD Shrink and put a DVD into the computer drive. Click “Open Disc”. Choose the letter of the CD/DVD-ROM drive. Click OK after making the selection.
Step 2
Choose “Backup” from the menu. By clicking “browse” you can choose a folder where the DVD will be kept. Click OK and the ripping of the VOB file will begin.
Step 3
Install a VOB merging app (i.e., VOB Merge). Choose “Add Files” to look for the folder with the ripped file. Put in the VOB file. Click “Join”. The file will be combined together.
Step 4
Launch your iPod converter (i.e., Videora iPod Converter, Free iPod Video Converter etc). Put the VOB file in the converter. Click “Convert” option. This will allow you to save the file as an IPod mp4 file. Now you can put the file in iTunes and to the iPod.
Tips and Warnings
Keep in mind that the compression time will vary depending on the size of the movie. Make sure the DVD disc is clean and working. If the program cannot read the disc, chances are it is dirty or broken. Try cleaning it then put it back on the drive.
It is easy to learn how to use DVD Shrink. With just a few mouse clicks, you can compress those discs and make backups. Before you download the file, make sure that your computer meets the minimum system specs.
